Where the Geospatial Metadata fields have been added to your dataset and are available for editing, the following guidance should be used to support the population of the fields with appropriate metadata content.
All of these fields may require updating post any ADA Staff quality assurance checking of the dataset. Where required, ADA Staff will identify issues through the Processing Report. Where changes are required, you may be asked to complete these directly into the dataset, but in some cases the ADA Staff may make the change with your approval if it is easier to do so.
ADA Dataverse DEPOSIT Geospatial Metadata Fields
Geographic Coverage: These fields support information on the geographic coverage of the data. Where multiple entries are required to accurately describe the data the Data Owner should use the ‘Add’ button to create additional fields. It is recommended that the Data Owner uses the GeoNames vocabulary for the correct spelling and identification of the locations. The GeoNames website can be found at https://www.geonames.org/. Abbreviations should be avoided.
- Country/Nation: Identifies the country or nation that the dataset is about.
- State/Province: The state or province that the dataset is about.
- City: The name of the city that the dataset is about.
- Other: Provide any other relevant information on the geographic coverage of the data that is not supported by the previous fields.
Geographic Unit: Enter the lowest level of the geographic aggregation covered by the dataset, for example village, country, region etc…
Geographic Bounding Box: The fundamental geometric description for any dataset that models geography is the geographic bounding box. It describes the minimum box, defined by west and east longitudes and north and south latitudes that captures the largest geographic extent of the dataset(s) coverage. This element is used in the first pass of a coordinate-based search. Inclusion of this element in the codebook is recommended, but is required if the bound polygon box is included.
- West Longitude: The Westernmost coordinate delimiting the geographic extent of the dataset. The value should be entered expressed in decimal degrees i.e. -125.0.
- East Longitude: The Easternmost coordinate delimiting the geographic extent of the dataset. The value should be entered expressed in decimal degrees i.e. 125.0.
- North Latitude: The Northernmost coordinate delimiting the geographic extent of the dataset. The value should be entered expressed in decimal degrees i.e. 52.0.
- South Latitude: The Southernmost coordinate delimiting the geographic extent of the dataset. The value should be entered expressed in decimal degrees i.e. -52.0.
